SAN ANTONIO – University of the Incarnate Word baseball team completed the come-from-behind win against Houston Baptist on Saturday night at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B. The Cardinals went down 4-0 to the visiting Huskies before mounting the comeback in the bottom fifth inning for a 5-4 win.
Michal McElmeel and Johnny Foral combined to pitch 6 1/3 scoreless innings as McElmeel remained perfect on the year with a 3-0 record in 4 1/3 innings of work and Foral picked up his first save of the season after an acrobatic throw to first on an HBU chopper down the third-base line.
After the Huskies took a 4-0 lead after three innings, Wilson Ehrhardt jump-started the Cardinals' offense with a solo home run in the fifth inning. His home run put in him the conversation as the team home run leader tied at seven with Lee Thomas and Grant Smith.
UIW was able to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Jordan McFarland and Ridge Rogers both rocketed singles to the outfield. With both runners on, Chance Medina laid down a perfect bunt down the third baseline, causing the HBU pitcher to rush his throw that went over the head of the first baseman as McFarland and Rogers scored on the play.
Medina stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Ehrhardt delivered again with an RBI single to score Medina and tie the game, 4-4.
Thomas and Ryan Flores put the Cardinals ahead in the seventh inning as Thomas led off with his fifth triple of the season that bounced off the wall in centerfield and scored on an RBI single by Flores in the next at-bat.
