SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team got a pair of wins in the midweek doubleheader against Tarleton State Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals won game one in walk off fashion, 1-0, in eight innings and went on to win game two 6-0 in the nightcap at H-E-B Field.

NOTABLES

• Annie Gunther picked up her second win on the year, pitching a complete eight inning game. Gunther only allowed five hits and struck out five in the win.
• Kendall McGary went 2-3 with the game winning RBI single up the middle in the bottom of eighth of game one.
• Ashley Trapp in game two got the win with a career high nine strikeouts for the junior.
• Abby Frank shined in game two, the sophomore went 2-4 with three RBI's.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
TSU would threaten first with runners on first and third in the top of the third inning. Annie Gunther would get the Texan batter swinging to end the inning and eliminate the scoring threat.
 
A five-pitch top of the fourth for the Cardinals and the game would be locked at zero heading to the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
TSU would threaten again in the top of the fifth, with runners on second and third with two outs. Hailey Goins would make the quick defense stop to get the runner at first and end the top half of the inning.  


In the bottom of the sixth, Kendall McGary would single to right field with two outs for the Cardinals second base runner of the game. A hard line drive right at the third baseman from Abby Frank would end the UIW rally.
 
The Cardinals defense would shine again in the top of the seventh when TSU would have runners on first and second with two outs. A ground ball to Frank and the flip to Goins at second would end the top half of the inning.
 
Pinch hitter Cat Esteves would single to left field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but a ground ball to shortstop from Savannah Behabetz would end the inning and we would head to extras.
 
In the bottom of the eighth, pinch hitting Jazmine Torres would draw the one out walk. Goins would deliver the sacrifice bunt to move Torres to second with two outs. Kendall McGary would call game with a single up the middle that would score Torres from second.

Game 2
The Cardinals kept the offense going in the bottom of the first. Frank doubled off the left field wall with one out to get UIW started. Behabetz ground ball to the pitcher moved Frank to third base. A fielder's choice put Maddie Boldt on first and a single from Esteves would score Frank.  

Bases loaded in the bottom of the second and Frank would hit a hard ground ball to the second baseman that would score Torres from third for a 2-0 lead for UIW.
 
In the top of the fourth the Texans had runners on first and third with no outs. Ashley Trapp would go on to strikeout the next three batters and end the scoring threat.
 
Bottom of the fourth and Frank delivered again. With two outs Frank had a 2 RBI single up the middle to score Goins and McGary.
 
Bottom of the fifth and the Cardinal's extended the lead from a Boldt solo home run. Tori Alvarez-Lopez followed it up with a double down the left field line and would eventually score on a Torres single up the middle.

UIW would go on to win game two 6-0.

UP NEXT
UIW will hit the road to compete against Southland Conference foe, Nicholls in Thibodaux, La. First pitch will be at 5:00 p.m. CT on Friday night.
