SAN ANTONIO, Texas. – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team opened Southland Conference play against Stephen F. Austin on Friday, dropping all three games of the series, first 11-1 (5 innings) then 8-0, and then 8-2 in the Saturday finale.
GAME ONE
Stephen F. Austin took an early, 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Ladyjacks would then add to their lead in the third inning on back-to-back homeruns, two bases-loaded walks, and a fielder's choice, to put them ahead of UIW 8-0.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Ladyjacks then scored three more runs in the top of the fifth to further their lead to 11-0. UIW added a run in the bottom of the fifth as Savannah Behabetz scored on a Bella Sanchez single to left field, but SFA closed out the 11-1 victory in game one.
GAME TWO
The Cardinals were unable to get the offense going in the second game of the day against SFA as they fell, 8-0. Kendall McGary and Tori Alvarez-Lopez were the only Cardinals to register a hit. Pitchers Natalie Myers and Annie Gunther put together seven strikeouts as a unit.
GAME THREE
SFA jumped to an early lead Saturday afternoon, putting up two runs in the first inning. The Cardinals would answer back in the bottom half of the inning with a Kendall McGary home run to left field, her second of the year.
It was all Ladyjacks from that point forward, scoring in the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings to give them the 8-1 advantage. UIW would look to rally late with Hailey Jackson scoring on an SFA defensive error but the Cardinals fell 8-2 in the series finale.
