SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team fell, 3-1, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday night inside the McDermott Center.
The Islanders claimed the first two sets 25-18 and 25-9, respectively. A&M-Corpus Christi opened the first set on a 5-1 run that quickly put them ahead and didn't concede the lead or let UIW get closer than within three. Despite getting on the board first, the Cardinals struggled to put away points eventually dropping the second set as well.
After a tough second set, UIW put together a comeback to force the game into a fourth set. UIW fought hard for each point in a set that saw 15 ties and seven score changes that went down to the wire.
With the score tied 21-21, the Cardinals pulled ahead off a no-look kill by Audrey Patton followed by a service ace by Bethany Clapp. Two Islander errors later and the Cardinals were headed to the fourth set.
UIW carried that momentum into the final set. The set was back and forth with eight ties, but despite the Cardinals taking the lead twice, they struggled to close out the game. Three consecutive kills from Clapp tied the game 20-20 to keep UIW alive. The Cardinals breathed down the Islanders' neck to the very end with the score 24-23, but a kill by Hannah Froeschl claimed the set and match for A&M-Corpus Christi.
