UIW Falls to Tarleton State University

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell, 58-47, to Tarleton State University (TSU) on Wednesday, Dec. 22, in the McDermott Center. This was the final game for the Cardinal before the holidays.

UIW was led by Jaaucklyn Moore's 17-point performance. Tiana Gardner followed with 13 points. Myra Bell led the Cardinals in rebounds with eight.

"I thought Myra Bell was really active in leading us with 8 rebounds and 4 assists, plus tying for the team lead with 3 steals," said head coach Jeff Dow.

Destiny Terrel started out strong with the first seven points of the game for the Cardinals, hitting a 3-pointer to give UIW the lead, 7-6. Jamie Means and Gardner followed with two strong drives to the basket to once again come within one point (14-13) at the end of the first quarter. Moore heated up to lead the Cardinals in the second quarter, scoring all five of her points during that frame. The Texans began to click on the offensive end, pushing their lead to 32-20 heading into the break.

UIW came out of the locker room strong as Gardner knocked down a pair of free throws. Moore followed by sinking a three and coming back down court for a fast-break layup to bring the Cardinals within seven. In the final 10 minutes, Moore drained another shot from behind the arc to pull UIW within three points, 46-43. The Texans ultimately went on a 6-0 scoring run to secure the win, 59-47.

"We're disappointed in today's result as we obviously would have liked to have gone into the Christmas break on a high note, especially after a great win the other day vs. UC Riverside," said Dow.  "Clearly what did us in was the dreadful second quarter.  In the other three quarters combined the score was dead even.  In the first half, we had 13 turnovers and 16 field goal attempts, which is a direct result as to why we only scored 20 points.  And that also led in part to them outscoring us 24-14 in points off turnovers, which was essentially the margin of the game.  I was proud of the effort that we came within the second half to cut the lead down to 3."
