SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team traveled to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) on Sunday for a hometown showdown. The Cardinals fell to the Roadrunners, 66-60.
Destiny Jenkins led the Cardinals with a career-high 21 points and seven steals.
Jaaucklyn Moore finished with 11 points, while
Destiny Terrell and
Tiana Gardner added eight points each.
"
Destiny Jenkins had a terrific all-around game with 21 points and seven steals. We have to find a way to get more contributions offensively from different people so we can have more balance," head coach
Jeff Dow said.
The Cardinals and Roadrunners both got out to a slow start as UTSA ended the first quarter up 13-9. Jenkins picked up a loose ball in UTSA's paint and kicked it out to Moore for a 3-pointer at the top of the key to put UIW on the board (4-3). Gardner then finished a short corner floater to put the Cardinals within four points at 9-5.
Arielle Adams and
Brenna Perez each knocked down a long jumper for UIW to end the first.
"We played well in spurts which is why they never actually pulled away from us but also why we never held a lead," Dow said. "The first quarter we got off to a poor start by only scoring nine points and shooting 27 percent from the field. But even more disappointing was the seven turnovers, four of which came on our first seven possessions of the game."
Terrell posted up on the block and scored the Cardinals' first points of the second quarter to stop UTSA's nine-point run.
Starr Omozee found Jenkins for a wide-open back door layup and the Cardinals were within three points once more at 25-22. UTSA preserved its lead, though, and ended the half up 31-23.
Two three-pointers from Jenkins and a jumper from Omozee gave the Cardinals eight quick points to start the third, leaving the Roadrunners with a narrow advantage (35-31). UTSA went on a 7-0 run to extend the lead to eleven and ultimately ended the quarter up 49-39.
The Cardinals chipped away at the Roadrunners' 10-point lead as Terrell striped the ball and found Moore for an open 3-pointer to pull UIW within two (53-51). The Roadrunners answered with a 13-9 run to keep the lead and win the game, 66-60.
"Once the season starts it's rare to get five opportunities to practice before your next game so we are looking forward to this stretch to hopefully show some improvement," Dow said.
