UIW Falls in their Final Regular Season Match

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – University of the Incarnate Word fell to Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi 3-0 in their final regular season match.
 
Annamarie Alvarez led the Cardinal offense with 10 kills on the match. Risa Sena and Bethany Clapp followed both registering seven kills. Natalie Kimmel set up the Cardinal offense totaling 19 assists on the night.  Macy Sumrall, Kimmel and Sena all registered a service ace to shake up the Islander defense. Sumrall led the Cardinal defense with 15 digs against the high intensity Islander offense.
 
The first set was a close back-and-forth match between the Cardinals and Islanders. This set consisted of six tied scores and two lead changes. The Cardinals continued to answer back to the Islanders. Alvarez and Jacqueline Arrington sparked the Cardinal offense combining for 10 of the 17 Cardinal kills in the first set. The Cardinals climbed back from being down by three points when Alvarez, Sena and a service ace from Sumrall tied the set, giving the Cardinals momentum throughout the set. The Cardinals went on to take the lead when Sena, Clapp and Arrington registered a kill against the Islander defense. The Islanders then tied the set at 22 before Chase Jackson came back with a kill to give the Cardinals the lead 23-22. The Islanders answered right back to tie the set at 24 before ultimately taking the set 26-24. The Cardinals were on fire the entire set, never giving up and pushing the Islanders to the very end.
 
The second set was another close one with six tied scores and one lead change. Clapp and Alvarez led the Cardinal offense this set combining for six of the Cardinal's 13 total kills. Arrington, Sena and Nailah Landon also added the Cardinal offense. The Cardinals began the set with an early 2-0 lead. The Islanders came back to tie the set at four. The Cardinals answered back tying the set at seven before the Islanders went on a scoring run the Cardinals couldn't break. Texas A&M-CC ultimately took the second set 25-18.
 
For the third set, the Cardinals fell 5-0 to start the set. Even with Clapp and Sena leading the Cardinal offense yet again, the Cardinals could not stop the Islanders scoring run. The Islanders secured the match with a 25-18 victory in the final set of the match.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals begin the Southland Conference Tournament on Thursday November 18 in Katy, Texas. This will be the second time in program history the Cardinal will make it to post-season play.
