Cardinals Fall to the Miners

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team fell to the Miners of The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) 81-47 on Thursday night.

The Miners started off the game in a full-court press against the Cardinals. UTEP won the first quarter 18-7. Jaaucklyn Moore drained back-to-back 3-pointers to close out the first and start the second quarter for the Cardinals. UIW bounced back in the second to win the quarter 21-19.

"After a tough start I thought we responded well in the second quarter to cut their lead to nine by halftime, " head coach Jeff Dow said.

UTEP's, Katia Gallegos scored all twelve of her points in the third quarter to carry the Miners to a seventeen-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

"UTEP went on a 6-0 run to start the second half and unfortunately we never really answered. We struggled with their physicality in every phase and allowed them to be the aggressor more often than not, " Dow said. "We knew they were a much improved team from the one we went to the wire with last season with the additions of Teal Battle, Eliana Cabral and a healthy Destiny Thurman. Much like it's going to be in conference, it's a quick turnaround with a game on Saturday against a veteran New Mexico State squad. Hopefully we see improvement defensively, on the boards and taking care of the ball."

Moore led the Cardinals with 10 points and six rebounds. Destiny Jenkins followed behind with nine points off three 3-pointers and Jamie Means finished with eight points.
