Last Week in UIW Athletics: September 27 – October 3

SAN ANTONIO – University of the Incarnate Word completes another week of competition. The cross country program hosts their annual UIW Invitational and women's golf sets a new UIW record.  

Women's Golf  

  • Traveled to the Huntsville Toyota Bearkat Invitational for their second tournament of the season.  

  • Ellen Nicholas took first place in the tournament hitting 5-under-par over three rounds of play 

  •  Nicholas broke the UIW 54-hole record scoring a 208 in the tournament.  

  • The team finished 5th overall at the tournament 

  • The team competes in the New Mexico State Aggie Invitational Monday through Wednesday 

Women's Soccer  

  • The Cardinals hosted Texas A&M – Corpus Christi before traveling to Houston, Texas to face the Huskies of Houston Baptist University. 

  • "The girls really battled hard, scoring two great goals in the first half and held onto it in the second half," Wright-Cates said.  

  • The Cardinals fell to the Huskies 2-1 following a last second HBU goal in overtime 

  • UIW turns around and hosts HBU on Sunday October 10 at 1 p.m. The team will be collecting toiletries and clothing for Family Violence Prevention Services Inc.  

Men's Soccer  

  • Hosted California Baptist on Friday, October 1 and Utah Valley on Sunday at 1 p.m.  

  • The Cardinals and the Lancers ended in a 1-1 draw following a UIW goal from Bernabe Lopez.  

  • "We played very confidently and very committed for the entire match," head coach Kiki Lara said. "I think the focus of the team tonight was there and it showed as the game went on." 

  • UIW fell to the Utah Valley Wolverines 2-1on Sunday, October 3 

  • "We put ourselves in a position to tie the game being down 2-0 at half," Lara said. "Coming back from behind is something we can do; we have done it before and it's a shame we didn't do it again today." 

  • The Cardinals travel west to take on Grand Canyon Friday, October 8 at 9 p.m. and the Air Force Academy on Sunday, October 10 at 1 p.m. 

Cross Country  

  • Hosted the 2021 UIW Invitational at the Olmos Basin Park on Saturday, October 2.  

  • The men's 8K began at 8:30 a.m. and the women's 5K began at 8:35 a.m. 

  • The men's program secured first place of 11 teams  

  • This is the second meet of the season the men's team has ranked first in competition.  

  • The women's program finished third of 11 teams  

  • Led by Maryn DeMaio who ran a 17:54.5 at a pace of 5:58  

  • The women were missing key runners from Abbigial Gray, Madi Henry, Ashlynn Royal and Andrea Acuna, however the Cardinals were still able to have a great showing in their home meet.  

Men's Tennis  

  • Sent three student-athletes to compete in the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  

OTHER SPORTS IN ACTION  
Volleyball  

  • September 30 against Northwestern State; W, 3-0 

  • October 2 against Southeastern Louisiana; L, 0-3 

Football  

  • October 2 at Northwestern State; W, 38-27
