University of the Incarnate Word Athletics

NATCHITOCHES, LA.– University of the Incarnate Word defeated Northwestern State, 38-27, for the first time under head coach Eric Morris' reign to stay undefeated in conference play. The Cardinals improved their overall record to 4-1 for the 2021 fall season.
 
Cameron Ward passed for 348 yards and three touchdowns. Kevin Brown led the team in rushing with 81 yards and hauled in a 54-yard touchdown reception. Marcus Cooper led the team with two rushing touchdowns including a 60-yard score. CJ Hardy led the Cardinals with 120 receiving yards for two touchdowns.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals came out strong with a quick 2-play scoring drive that ended in a touchdown. Ward found Hardy for a 47-yard completion that set up his 2-yard rushing touchdown to give the Cardinals the early advantage. The defense followed right back with a quick six-play turnaround to give the ball back to the Cardinals. Cooper rushed for 60-yards for the second touchdown of the night. The Cardinals led the Demons 14-0 heading to the second quarter.
 
The second quarter started with a field goal from Northwestern. It was back and forth from beginning to the end of the quarter. Ward and Hardy connected again for a 17-yard pass completion for a UIW touchdown. Northwestern answered right back with a 53-yard pass for a touchdown.  Brown then completed a 54-yard pass from Ward for a UIW touchdown, extending the Cardinal lead. The defense then held the Demons to a field goal keeping the lead heading into halftime.
 
UIW came out of halftime a little rocky to start. With a muffed punt and an interception, the Demons were able to come away with a touchdown. However, Ward turned the energy around when he found Trevor Begue for a 50-yard completion that set up Marcus Cooper for another touchdown.
 
The Cardinals ended the night with a 23-yard field goal from Carson Mohr giving UIW their first victory against the Demons under head coach Eric Morris and his staff.
