CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – It was a tough loss on Friday night for the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team as it fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a score of 3-2. The Cardinals led through 7.1 innings before the Islanders scored three in the bottom of the eighth to sneak out the victory.
NOTABLES
- Luke Taggart pitched seven shutout innings before a tough eighth frame. He struck out four batters while only allowing four hits in 7.1 innings of work.
- Kyle Bergeron went 2-3 at the plate, including an RBI double.
- Ryan Flores had a single in each of his first three at bats of the game as he finished 3-5 in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started out as a pitcher's duel through the first four innings as Luke Taggart battled with TAMU-CC's John Gaddis, with neither pitcher allowing a run.
The first run of the game came from the Cardinals with a Landon Etzel single to left field in the top of the fifth to score Ridge Rogers, giving UIW a 1-0 lead.
The next run came again from the Cardinals in the top of the sixth. Flores led off with a single through the left side, marking his third such hit of the game. After Grant Smith was hit by a pitch, Kyle Bergeron stepped up to plate with a chance to add to UIW's lead. He did not disappoint as he roped a two-out double to left field to score Flores from second, giving the team a two-run advantage.
The Islanders started off the bottom of the eighth with three consecutive walks drawn. Those free passes proved to be costly as TAMU-CC followed up with three hits in the inning to eventually take a 3-2 lead over the Cardinals.
UIW was unable to manufacture any momentum in the top of the ninth as it dropped its opening conference game to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
