SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped the second game of the two-game series against New Mexico on Wednesday night, 11-6. The Lobos took both games of the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lobos jumped on the board in the top of the first inning with three runs after
Andrew Girod walked three and hit another. But Girod battled through the control issues to get out of the inning with only three runs allowed.
In the bottom half of the inning,
Landon Etzel led off with a leadoff double down the left field line to increase his hit streak to 10 games.
Grant Smith and
Ryan Flores both followed up with good situational hitting as they both hit to the right side of the infield to advance Etzel each time to get on the scoreboard.
With the score at 3-1, Girod found the strike zone more consistently in the second inning and drew three groundouts. With two outs,
Kyle Bergeron looked like Roberto Alomar at second base as he made an outstanding diving play up the middle and flipped it to short for the third and final out of the inning.
UIW chipped away another run in the bottom of the second after
Ridge Rogers walked and
Grady Davenport singled through the left side.
CJ Horn was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Smith stepped up with two outs and took a pitch off his leg for a hard-earned bruise and an RBI to cut the lead to 3-2.
After the shaky first inning, Girod settled down nicely for 3 2/3 scoreless innings, his 4 2/3 innings are a career high as well as the three strikeouts.
In the top of the fifth, the Lobos added two unearned runs to take a 5-2 lead. As usual, the Cardinals responded in the bottom half of the inning.
Grant Smith led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With a runner in scoring position,
Ryan Flores smoked a double to right center for his second RBI of the night. He continues to rake with runners in scoring position this year as he entered the series with a .583 batting average in 12 at bats.
Lobos tacked on four more runs in the next two innings to up their lead to six runs at 9-3.
After a leadoff single to left center from
Grant Smith,
Ron Brown stepped into the batter's box after he replaced Flores in the bottom of the fifth. Brown's first hit of the season came by pure destruction of the baseball as he hit a home run to left field over the protective net in the outfield to cut the lead to 9-5.
In the top of the eighth, New Mexico added two runs after UIW pitching walked four batters in the inning. Smith added an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to put the score at 11-6.
Justin Anaya made his collegiate debut in the top of the ninth and had a clean 1-2-3 inning including his first career strikeout.
