Baseball completes series sweep over Oral Roberts on the road

TULSA, Okla. – Lee Thomas scored on an RBI single by Ryan Flores in the ninth inning to lift the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team over Oral Roberts University, 6-5, on Sunday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium, giving the Cardinals the series sweep.

NOTABLES
  • Senior designated hitter Thomas extended his hitting streak to 10 games and his reached-base streak to 16 games – both dating back to the 2019 season. Thomas had a 1-for-3 outing with a run, a RBI and three walks.
  • Freshman shortstop Grant Smith has successfully reached base in all 10 games as a Cardinal.
  • Smith and junior first baseman Ryan Flores led the Cardinals, both going 2-for-5.
  • This is UIW's first series sweep on the road since March 22-24, 2019, against McNeese.
  • Aaron Celestino (3-0) earned the win for the Cardinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Cardinals started their comeback with two runs in the top of the third. With runners on second and third and one out, Thomas grounded out to bring home senior catcher Kyle Bergeron. Junior third baseman Grady Davenport promptly followed with a single to third base to drive in senior left fielder Landon Etzel, leaving ORU clinging to a 3-2 advantage.

ORU tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth to further their advantage to 4-2, but UIW responded in the next frame. The Cardinals took advantage of the Golden Eagles' defensive mistakes in the top of the seventh to take their first lead of the game. Three runs scored on a fielder's choice, an error and a bases-loaded walk to give UIW the 5-4 advantage. ORU knotted the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth, but UIW refused to let another game of the series go into extra innings.

The Cardinals took back the lead (6-5) in the ninth inning as Flores singled to right field to drive in Thomas. The Golden Eagles attempted a comeback in the bottom of the frame, but the Cardinal defense shut them down to secure the 6-5 victory.
