SAN ANTONIO – It was a tough day in the field for a normally sure-handed University of the Incarnate Word softball team. The Cardinals fell to Big East foe Creighton by the final score of 9-6.
NOTABLES
- Renee Hoffman had a stellar day at the plate as she posted three hits in four at bats, driving in two runs.
- It was another two-hit game for junior Hailey Goins as she finished with a double and an RBI.
- Junior Teanna Lucio also added two hits and an RBI in the losing effort.
- Annie Gunther pitched in her third game of the season but unfortunately ran into some bad luck as none of her four runs were earned. She pitched three innings with two strikeouts.
- Freshman Natalie Myers pitched 1.1 innings of relief while only allowing one base runner.
HOW IT HAPPENED
This was a game that a young Cardinals team will look back and learn from as they team committed four errors in the loss. UIW took an early four-run lead in the second inning with the score of 5-1.
Creighton was ready to play as they scored one run in the top of the first to set the tone.
It was another outstanding game from Goins as she put the Cardinals on the board with an RBI double to score Sam Wendel. The bats stayed hot as Lucio singled to left field to hit Goins home. Lucio was followed up by leadoff hitter, Kendall McGary who singled to center. McGary now has a hit in all five games to start the season.
Hoffman then doubled down the right field line to drive in two runs to give the Cardinals a commanding 5-1 lead.
The Blue Jays offensive prowess showed back up in the top of the third and responded with four runs of their own to tie the game up. Creighton subsequently scored four more runs over the next three innings to take a 9-5 lead heading into the bottom of the last frame.
The Cardinals showed once again they're never out of a game as they were able to muster one run on an RBI single by junior Tori Alvarez-Lopez, but it wasn't enough as UIW's seventh-inning momentum came to an end and Creighton came away with the 9-6 victory.
UP NEXT
