Softball rallies in 9th to win second game of Cardinal Invitational, splits day

SAN ANTONIO- On a brisk Friday night, the University of the Incarnate Word softball team faced off against two Northeast schools, splitting the games. The Cardinals fell to Cleveland State, 6-4, in the first game, but rallied to beat Fairleigh Dickinson 3-2 in nine innings in the second.

NOTABLES
  • Sophomore Renee Hoffman continues her assault on the softball as she went 4-6 on the day, including a double and three RBI.
  • In one of the most complete games of the season, Annie Gunther pitched all nine innings against Fairleigh Dickinson. She only allowed one earned run while striking out nine (career high) to earn her first career victory.
  • Kendall McGary improved her hitting streak to seven games, adding three more hits to her total.
  • Freshman Savannah Behabetz had the game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the 8th inning and then had the walk-off, bases loaded HBP to seal the victory against FDU.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1 vs. Cleveland State
UIW will look back on this one as a learning experience. The Cardinals held a 4-1 lead after five innings, but CSU overtook them in the final inning to hand UIW the loss.

Hoffman was the main source of offense as she had two RBI singles in the first and third innings to spark the offense. Freshman Abby Frank and junior Tori Alvarez-Lopez also contributed RBI singles in the fifth to push the lead to 4-1.

But the top of the sixth caused trouble after the Vikings found the gaps in the Cardinal defense and scored three runs on three hits to tie it up at 4-4. They added two more in the seventh to take the lead and that proved to be too much for the young UIW team to overcome.

Game 2 vs. Fairleigh Dickinson
Annie Gunther carried the team on her back in the second game of the day as she pitched a complete 9-inning game while only allowing two runs (one earned). She never allowed the Knights to get into a rhythm at the plate as she had nine strikeouts in the game.

Hoffman's hot bat carried over into this game as she added another RBI single to her already impressive stat line for the day in the first inning.

This game was a pitcher's duel throughout the length of the game. Hailey Goins was rock solid at second base as she made play after play on hard ground balls that came her way.

But the hero of the extra innings turned out to be freshman Savannah Behabetz. With the Cardinals trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th inning with two outs, Behabetz knocked a line drive through the left side to score Julia Cordon from second, tying it up at 2-2. She then came up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th inning with the score still tied at 2-2. She worked the count and took the final pitch off her leg for the walk-off hit-by-pitch to give UIW the win.
