TULSA, Okla. -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team used an impressive offensive attack, complete with 17 hits and 17 runs scored, to defeat Oral Roberts, 17-5, to open the weekend series on Friday afternoon at J. L. Johnson Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Oral Roberts plated two runs in the bottom of the second to take an early 2-0 lead, but UIW responded in the top of the third as Thomas smacked a single through the right side to drive in Medina, making the score 2-1. The Cardinals then tied the game up at 2-2 in the top of the fourth as junior right fielder
Drew Minter drilled a RBI double to right center.
UIW grabbed its first lead of the game (7-2) as it exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth. Smith got the Cardinals going as he hit a RBI single and then scored on a double by Rogers. Oral Roberts' Foster Roy was wild on the mound and UIW took advantage. The Cardinals utilized their strong perseverance to plate three more runs on a wild pitch, a hit-by pitch and a walk. The Golden Eagles' Adam Oviedo hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to cut the Cardinals' lead to 7-3.
UIW tallied up five more runs – using two RBI singles (Etzel and
Grady Davenport), a two RBI double (Thomas) and a sacrifice fly (Flores) – in the top of the seventh to extend its advantage to 12-3.
ORU tacked on two runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut UIW's lead to 12-5, but the Cardinals were not done with their offensive attack and added five more runs in the top of the ninth to secure the 17-5 victory. First, Thomas scored on a Flores ground out; Smith then tallied his second hit and second RBI on the day, singling to left field to bring home Davenport.
Kyle Bergeron got in on the action with an RBI double to left field before Etzel closed out the scoring with a two-RBI single to center field.
