Cardinals look to keep winning streak alive against Lamar

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team hosts Lamar at 6:30 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday at the McDermott Center.

UIW (13-12, 9-7 SLC) heads into the game against Lamar (9-17, 5-12 SLC)following a significant win over conference-leader SFA, while the Lamar Cardinals look to snap a six-game losing streak.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Senior guard Imani Robinson was named the Southland Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 24 following a win against McNeese (Feb. 19) and UIW's first win against SFA in program history (Feb. 22). This is the first time a Cardinal has earned the accolade since Hailey Frias back in 2016-17. Robinson averaged 18.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists over 36 minutes in two games.

BIG CARD

Senior forward Lunden Henry has been crucial for the Cardinals as of late, first in the final seconds against McNeese and again in the paint during the win over SFA. Henry is shooting 43.9 percent in the paint. Her 43.9 percent accuracy leads the team and ranks in the top 20 in the SLC. The 6-1 forward made clutch free throws late in UIW's victory against McNeese as the Cardinals completed their second sweep of an opponent this season. Henry scored a season-high 16 points against the Cowgirls.

UIW IN THE SOUTHLAND

UIW has maintained the fourth-best defense in the conference, limiting opponents to 59.9 points per game. The Cardinals also have the fifth-best 3-point field goal percentage and defense, shooting 31.9 percent from beyond the arc and making 5.6 threes per contest, while limiting opponents to 29.5 percent from the perimeter.

SERIES HISTORY

Earlier this season, UIW defeated Lamar for the first time in program history, 67-48, to improve to 1-10 in head-to-head matchups.

 

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

  • Lamar has the second-best defense around the perimeter, limiting opponents to 27.8 percent.
  • The Lamar Cardinals have the best turnover margin in the league (4.23), forcing opponents to turn the ball over 20.5 times per contest compared to their own 16.3 turnovers.
  • Lamar is led by Angel Hastings' 13.0 points per game, which rates 11th best in the SLC. The bulk of her points are made from 3-point range as she shoots 36.7 from beyond the arc, averaging 2.0 3-pointers per contest.
  • Amber Vidal is another contributor offensively for Lamar, averaging 12.5 points per game. She makes 1.6 3-pointers per game while shooting 30.4 percent from 3-point range and 77.1 percent from the free throw line.
  • Senior forward Briana Laidler leads the Cardinals on the glass as she averages 8.0 rebounds per game. She is also a big contributor defensively as she averages 1.5 blocks per game. Laidler is the most accurate shooter of the SLC, scoring at a rate of 59.5 percent in the paint.
