Cardinals’ bats lift them over Lady Braves

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – The University of the Incarnate Word softball team finished off the Mardi Gras Mambo with an 8-6 win over Alcorn State on Sunday afternoon. It was the team's third win of the weekend, with two of them coming against the Lady Braves.

NOTABLES
  • After recording her first career hit and RBI yesterday, freshman Maddie Boldt went 3-3 today with an RBI, a double, a walk and two runs scored.
  • Junior Tori Alvarez-Lopez also recorded three hits on the afternoon while driving in a career-high three RBI.
  • Renee Hoffman earned her third win of the year in the circle.
  • Utility freshman Devyn Sanchez made the most of her first career start as she went 2-3 on the day with two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals' bats exploded in the last game of the Mardi Gras Mambo as the team collected 11 hits on the afternoon in their win over Alcorn State.

Alvarez-Lopez got the party started in the first inning with an RBI single to center field, the first of her three hits on the day. But the Lady Braves answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.

With runners on second and third in the top of the third inning, Boldt singled through the left side to score Kendall McGary and tie it up. Alvarez-Lopez then roped a double down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Cardinals a 4-2 lead.

Going into the top of the fifth with the same score, Sanchez lined a two-run single up the middle to increase the lead to 6-2. Senior Delaney Guzman followed suit with a two-run single to left center to add two more insurance runs, giving the Cardinals an 8-2 lead.

That proved to be enough for UIW as they were able to hold off a persistent Lady Braves team and earn the third win of the Mardi Gras Mambo, 8-6.
 
UP NEXT
The Cardinals will have a week of rest and practice before they hop on a plane and head to Florida to compete in the Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Florida, on Feb. 28-March 1.
