MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The sunny beaches of Florida haven't been very friendly to the University of the Incarnate Word softball team so far in the Spring Games as they fell in the first two contests. The Cardinals dropped the first game against Sacred Heart 3-2 and then fell to Florida Gulf Coast 8-0 in six innings.
NOTABLES
- Freshman Kendall McGary finished the day going 3-5 at the plate with a walk and a run scored. She boosted her average to .333 on the season.
- The Cardinals' leading hitter, Abby Frank, added another three hits to her total as she went 2-4 vs. Sacred Heart and 1-2 vs. FGCU. She's hitting a team-best .394 on the season.
- Renee Hoffman went 1-3 with an RBI in the batter's box and pitched a complete game, allowing three runs (zero earned) on four hits in the loss to Sacred Heart.
- Junior Hailey Goins added two hits in the 8-0 loss to Florida Gulf Coast.
GAME 1
vs. Sacred Heart
The first matchup of the Spring Games came against the Pioneers of Sacred Heart.
Renee Hoffman pitched another solid game in the circle for the Cardinals as she battled the Pioneers for seven strong innings. She made one mistake the whole game, when she gave up a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the third inning. It was the only time Sacred Heart was able to cross the plate.
The Cardinals battled back, getting two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Hoffman and
Maddie Boldt both walked in an RBI each. With the deficit still at 3-2, UIW continued to fight but was unable to gain any more momentum and ultimately fell to the Pioneers.
GAME 2
vs. Florida Gulf Coast
The Cardinals weren't able to find a rhythm against a strong Florida Gulf Coast team. FGCU was led by junior standout pitcher Sarah Lawton, who earned her sixth win of the season.
The Eagles jumped out early and went up 4-0 after the first frame. They added runs in all but the second and fourth innings. By the end of the sixth, the Cardinals had surrendered eight runs and the game was over.
Goins was the only Cardinal with multiple hits as she finished the game 2-3 with a double at the plate. McGary also added a hit and a walk in Friday's final competition.
