UIW returns to McDermott Center following long road stretch to host Northwestern State

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team takes on Northwestern State, beginning the second leg of Southland Conference play, at 6:30 p.m. (CT) on Wednesday night at the McDermott Center.
 
UIW returns to the McDermott Center after going 2-1 on the road with wins against Abilene Christian and Sam Houston State, but falling to Southeastern Louisiana.

SERIES HISTORY
UIW holds a three-game winning streak against NSU after losing the first four matchups against the Lady Demons. Earlier this season the Cardinals (10-11, 6-6 SLC) took on the Lady Demons (6-16, 3-10 SLC) defeating them, 69-67 in overtime.
 
THE CARDINALS
  • Cardinals have maintained the fourth-best scoring defense in the Southland, holding opponents to 60.7 points per game.
  • UIW is 4-2 on the road in conference play, with two of those wins against Abilene Christian, the team predicted to win the league in the preseason poll, and Sam Houston State, who was tied for first in the Southland heading into the game.
  • Imani Robinson dropped a career-high 31 points in the win against Sam Houston State (Feb. 5). She is now averaging 14.1 points per game, which is sixth-best in the league, while shooting 40.9 percent from the field and 71.8 percent from the free-throw line, ranking among the top 20 in the league.
  • Junior guard Kara Speer leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game (5th SLC) while bringing down 5.2 defensive boards per game (T-4th SLC).
 
SCOUTING THE LADY DEMONS
  • Northwestern State (6-16, 3-10 SLC) heads into the game after snapping a five-game losing streak with a 54-46 win against Houston Baptist on Saturday.
  • Senior guard Kira Bonner's 14.9 points per game leads the Lady Demons, which also ranks fourth best in the Southland. She has scored 30+ points twice this season, first against Houston Baptist (Jan. 5) dropping 32 points and then again against Southeastern Louisiana (Jan. 25) when she scored 31 points.
  • Junior forward Lacee Savage leads NSU on the boards, bringing down 5.1 per game. Her 2.5 offensive boards per game are eighth-best in the league.
  • Northwestern State is shooting 33.1 percent from the field, the lowest rate in the league.
