Box Score ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team sweeps Southern University in their first match of the 2019 Maverick Classic tournament. The Cardinals were in control of the sets for most of the game.
 
NOTABLES

• Two Cardinals finished with double-digit kills. Bethany Clapp with 11 and Allison Waits with 10.
• Presley Blaylock had a personal season high of 11 assists.
• The team totaled in seven aces for the match.
• UIW had 41 kills to SU's 29.

 
UIW  3 – SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY 0 
HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (25-17) | The Cardinals entered the set strong getting a lead early in the game. The Jaguars were able to fight back and tie the game 10-10. It didn't take long for UIW to take the lead back after going on a 4-0 scoring run to lead by three. The Cardinals led for the rest of the game. Pilar Gonzaba finished the set with 11 assists.  

SET 2 (25-14) | UIW took control of the set going on a 7-0 scoring run to leave the game at 3-10. Southern University was able to respond and eventually be down by three. Bethany Clapp produced three kills for the Cardinals. UIW was strong on the line with four aces to help them take the lead. 

SET 3 (25-19) | UIW had control for the entire set over the Jaguars starting the game on a 4-0 scoring run. Two Cardinals posted double digit kills, Clapp with 11 and Allison Waits with 10.

"It was good to get some kids more minutes that haven't seen the court a lot so far. We did a nice job with running our offense and trying new things. Tonight we have to control the serving and passing game and take care of the easy balls. UTA is a good team and big. We need to play well to compete with them on their home court."
