UIW finishes day one of the Maverick Classic 1-1

ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team falls to UT Arlington in three. The Cardinals finish day one of the Maverick Classic with a record of 1-1. 

NOTABLES

• Camden Gray finished the match with five kills and three blocks, a personal record. 
• Bethany Clapp led UIW in kills totaling eight. 
• Setter Pilar Gonzaba had 18 assists and led the team with 7 digs for the match.

UIW 0– UTA 3 
HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (11-25) | The Mustangs took an early lead over on a 7-0 scoring run over the Cardinals at the start of the game. UTA produced 15 kills over UIW's eight. The Mustangs took advantage of their perfect play and forced the Cardinals into four errors. Cameron Taylor led UIW with three kills. 

SET 2 (23-25) | UIW found their spark going on a 4-0 scoring run to tie the game 6-6. The Cardinals continued to go point for point with the Mustangs causing nine ties and seven lead changes. Camden Gray produced three kills and Pilar Gonzaba tallied five digs.

SET 3 (20-25) | UIW kept the game close for the entire match with 12 ties in the set. The Cardinals stayed aggressive at the net and produced 10 kills and four blocks for the set. Bethany Clapp was the kill leader in the set for the Cardinals with a total of 5 kills.

On the game…
"UTA just played way more physical than us. They played more aggressive than us in the out of system game.  Again, we served and passed well. First set was a fluke and we came out slow and were nervous. It's tough playing a team on their home court in their home opener but we need to execute more. "

On continuing in the tournament…
"Tomorrow we will bounce back and focus more on our side and work on staying in the long rallies and playing well against UNCG when they are out of system."

UP NEXT
UIW continues their Maverick Classic tournament play tomorrow against UNC Greensboro at 11 a.m. The Cardinals then have a match later in the day against SMU at 4 p.m.
