HOW IT HAPPENED
SETS 1 AND 2 (25-22 AND 16-25) | The Cardinals battled hard in a first set that saw eight ties and two lead changes. With the score knotted at 15-15, UIW put up back-to-back points, first with a kill by McGarity and then a UTEP error, to take the lead for good as they secured a 1-0 match lead. The Miners rebounded in the second set, taking an early lead and breaking away to even the match (1-1).
Â
SETS 3 AND 4 (27-25 AND 22-25) | UIW found its footing again in set three, which was also a tightly contested set. After another 10 ties and five lead changes that resulted in the score being even at 25-25, UIW forced two UTEP errors to take a 2-1 match advantage. In set four, a similar situation ended in UTEP's favor, with the Miners coming out on top after the score was tied at 20-20.
Â
SET 5 (14-16) | Set five was no different than the other four sets. It featured six ties and four lead changes. The score was tied, this time at 14-14, when a UTEP kill snatched the lead. The Miners then used back-to-back points to clinch the 16-14 set victory and the 3-2 match win.
