Box Score SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team opened Southland Conference play with a 1-0 win over Texas A&M- Corpus Christi in an overtime penalty kick in their Friday night matchup.
NOTABLES:
- Keeley Ayala secured the golden goal in OT off a penalty kick to finalize the 1-0 shutout over Texas A&M- Corpus Christi.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals held off the Islanders in the first half, limiting their offense to three shots while also putting off five of their own. The half ended scoreless.
UIW came out to the second period with aggressive strategy, taking six more shots. Goalkeeper
Cailey Croson stood firm in the net to rack up five saves in the second half. The Islanders only got five of their six shots on target, making Croson's save percentage .8333 on the match. Again, the period ended scoreless, to send the match to overtime.
Working quickly to set up plays, the Cardinals found an opportunity when a foul was committed inside the box for a penalty.
Keeley Ayala set up to take the penalty kick and buried the ball in the back of the net with a shot on the upper right corner. The golden goal secured the team's second win of the season and first in conference putting them at 1-0 in the SLC.
The Cardinals concluded the night to tally 12 shots, with seven on goal.
UP NEXT
UIW heads out to face Southeastern Louisiana on Sept. 27, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. CT.
