HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word football team takes on Sam Houston State in its first out-of-town game of the season on Saturday night at 6 p.m. (CT) in Huntsville, Texas. The game kicks off Southland Conference play for the Cardinals.

CARDINAL QUICK HITS
- In the second quarter against Texas Southern, UIW's kickoff team recovered a fumble, marking the 14th consecutive game where the Cardinals have forced a turnover. This season, the squad has a +3 turnover margin, which ranks second in the conference.
- UIW set multiple program records against Texas Southern:
- Sophomore quarterback Jon Copeland recorded five touchdowns through the air, breaking the school record for individual touchdown passes in a game and tying the record for team touchdown passes in a game.
- The Cardinals rushed for a school-record 402 yards, breaking the previous mark of 396 yards set in 2013.
- Those rushing yards contributed to 746 total offensive yards, which shattered the previous record (656 set at Central Arkansas on Nov. 11, 2018).
- The team scored 63 points, which ranks as the second-highest scoring output in a single game in school history.
- Senior wide receiver Kam Williams had three touchdown receptions, tying the school record.
- Williams finished the game with 146 yards, marking the third time in his career he has tallied at least 140 yards in a game.
SCOUTING SAM HOUSTON
- The Bearcats are 1-2 on the season with two road losses to New Mexico (39-31, Aug. 31) and North Dakota (27-23, Sept. 14) and a win at home against Oklahoma Panhandle (77-0, Sept. 7).
- The offense runs a balanced attack, averaging 258 passing yards and 214 rushing yards per game.
- The team has four student-athletes with more than 100 rushing yards on the season, three of whom also have three or more touchdowns on the ground.
- The Bearkat offense has committed seven turnovers in the first three games of the season.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Cardinals are 1-5 when playing against the Bearkats.
- UIW beat Sam Houston in 2018, 43-26 (11/3/18), at home on its way to a share of the SLC title. This was the first time in program history the Cardinals defeated SHSU.
