FRISCO, Texas -- The University of the Incarnate Word football program had five student-athletes --
Brandon Floores,
Terence Hickman II,
Jon Copeland,
Uzoma Okere and
David Balcomb -- selected for the 2019 Southland Football Preseason All-Conference teams, announced the league office Thursday.
Â
"I'm proud of Brandon, Terence, Jon, Uzoma and David," said UIW Head Coach
Eric Morris. "They worked hard last season and have continued put in the work during the off-season to prepare for next year. I'm excited to see how their hard work pays off."
Â
Offensive linemen Floores and Hickman were both named first team on the offensive side of the ball, while Copeland, Okere and Balcomb all earned second team offense.
Â
The Cardinals are coming off a record-breaking season that saw Morris named Southland Conference Coach of the Year after he led the team to a 6-5 overall record that included an FCS Playoff berth.
Â
Brandon Floores, Offensive Line, First Team
Floores earned first team All-Southland Conference honors following the 2018 season. As UIW's starting center, he anchored an offensive line that allowed senior
Ra'Quanne Dickens to break the program record for individual rushing yards (1,117) and individual rushing touchdowns (14) in a season. As a team, the Cardinals broke the record for pass completions (248) and passing yards (3,550). UIW also set multiple other offensive records.
Â
Terence Hickman II, Offensive Line, First Team
Hickman was selected first team all-conference after his performance on the offensive line in 2018. He guided UIW to a 6-2 SLC record and helped the team tally 1,696 rushing yards. The Cardinals also converted eight fourth-down attempts and set the program record for both total offensive yards (5,315) and touchdowns (48).
Â
Jon Copeland, Quarterback, Second Team
Copeland broke multiple UIW records as a freshman, including passing yards in a single season (2,984), total offense (3,061), passing completions (208) and passing touchdowns (22) en route to a second team all-conference selection. The 2018 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year also threw for 515 yards against Lamar (Oct. 13, 2018). That was the first 500+ yard throwing performance in program history and one of just three such performances by a quarterback in the nation throughout the season.
Â
Uzoma Okere, Offensive Line, Second Team
Another member of the offensive line, Okere helped the 2018 Cardinals to their first FCS Playoff berth in program history. In addition to the aforementioned rushing and passing records, UIW also broke multiple receiving records. Okere helped senior wide receivers
Kody Edwards (932) and
Phillip Baptiste (905) become the first receivers in program history to record more than 900 yards.
Â
David Balcomb, Punter, Second Team
Balcomb played in every game as UIW's punter in 2018. He recorded 50 punts for 1,968 yards, averaging 39.4 yards per punt. He had a long punt of 66 yards with eight punts over 50 yards. Balcomb also landed 15 punts inside the 20 and had four touchbacks.
Â
The Cardinals kick off the 2019 season against crosstown rival UTSA on Aug. 31. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. (CT) at the Alamodome.
