SAN ANTONIO -- University of the Incarnate Word junior John Hill has been named March Southland Conference Men's Golfer of the Month, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
 
Hill, a junior business management major from McQueeney, Texas, has won a share of three tournament individual titles this season and has shared a second-place finish in a fourth. In March, he tied for the first-place medalist position in two tournaments, the Bash at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and the Big Texan in Kerrville, Texas.
 
Hill played six tournament rounds in March, averaging 68.5 per 18 holes. He shot two 65s, a six-under-par effort in Myrtle Beach and seven strokes under par in Kerrville. The latter tied a UIW school record for the lowest round versus par in program history -- established by Austin Jordan in 2014 and matched by Scott Shaw in 2015.
 
Hill also set a school record for the lowest three-round tournament performance. In Kerrville, he shot scores of 70-68-65 for a total of 203, some 13 strokes under par. The 203 score broke the record of 206 set by Jordan in 2014.
 
Hill has been instrumental in boosting his team's performance all season. In March, he helped the Cardinals tie one team record and set another. In Kerrville, UIW equaled the school mark for the lowest 18-hole round and set a new record for the best aggregate score during a three-round, 54-hole tournament.
 
Hill is also an excellent scholar. He has been named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll during his freshman and sophomore years.
 
First-year UIW head coach Remy Huston Jr. said: "I am so happy for John and the way he has played all year. This past month has been great for him, and all of his hard work has paid off. I look forward to seeing more of his success."
 
Reacting to the news of his award, Hill said: "Being named Golfer of the Month means a lot. I know there are a lot of great players in the Southland and March is the time of year when everyone is playing well. I want to thank coach Huston for all of his help on the course. He has done a great job of keeping me focused while I'm playing.
 
"My team has been really supportive as well," Hill added, "always rooting for me to do well. Last month I received Honorable Mention for this award, so to be able to win it the next month feels good."
