Cardinals drop a pair of close games against Sam Houston State

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team came up just short against the Sam Houston State Bearkats in Friday's doubleheader, dropping the first game 6-4 and the second game 5-2 on H-E-B Field.

NOTABLES
  • Sophomore catcher Jenna Bleiberg launched her second home run of the season in the first game, a solo shot to left field.
  • In that same game, senior shortstop Angel Villanueva went 1-4 with two RBIs.
  • Sophomore center fielder Teanna Lucio went 3-8 on the day with two RBIs and a stolen base.
  • Sophomore pitcher Brett Coleman held the Bearkats scoreless in six out of the seven innings she pitched. She finished her complete game allowing just two earned runs on six hits.
  • Freshman pitcher Renee Hoffman also tossed a complete game, allowing just three earned runs on nine hits with one strikeout. She also recorded a base hit in the same game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
The Bearkats got on the board first with a run in the opening inning and added three more in the top of the second to open up a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Bleiberg crushed a solo home run to left field to reduce the Cardinal deficit to three. The Bearkats added a pair of runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-1 before the Cardinals started to put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh. Lucio got things started with an RBI single up the middle and Villanueva followed with a two-RBI single to center field to make it a two run game. Unfortunately, UIW couldn't keep the rally going as the Cardinalls fell, 6-4.

Game 2
UIW struck first when a SHSU error brought in Hope Sobolewski from third to make it 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning. Lucio drove in another run on a single up the middle to put the Cardinals in front, 2-0. Coleman continued to mow through the Bearkat order until the fifth inning, when a couple of base hits and a home run gave SHSU a 5-2 lead. The Cardinals couldn't manage to respond, and the Bearkats walked away with the 5-2 victory.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals will try and salvage one game of the series in tomorrow's home season finale, which will also be Senior Day. First pitch is set for noon.
