Cardinals drop a pair of close games in Thursday doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team came up short in both games of Thursday's Southland conference doubleheader against Houston Baptist, losing the first game by a score of 8-6 and the second 1-0.

NOTABLES
  • Senior shortstop Angel Villanueva hit two home runs in the first game of the day, finishing the game 2-3 with a season-high six RBIs.
  • It was her first multiple home run game of the season and first of her career.
  • In the same game, Jenna Bleiberg and Delaney Guzman both went 2-3 with two runs scored apiece.
  • Freshman pitcher Renee Hoffman got the start in the second game, putting up one of her best performances of the season. The Michigan product pitched a full 6.0 innings, surrendering just one run on five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Hoffman also went 1-3 at the plate in the same game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1

The Cardinals got on the board first with a three-run shot over the left-field wall from Villanueva in the top of the second. HBU countered with three runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game back up. UIW immediately regained the lead in the top of the fourth when Villanueva hit her second bomb of the day, driving in three more runs to make it a 6-3 game. HBU put together a five-run inning in the bottom of the fifth and was able to hold on for the 8-6 win.

Game 2
HBU's one run in the bottom of the fifth was enough to lift the Huskies to victory in an extremely competitive pitcher's duel.
