SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team picked up its first conference series win Saturday against Abilene Christian with a 7-4 victory. The Cardinals move to 4-23 overall and 2-8 in Southland Conference play with the win.
NOTABLES
- Hope Sobolewski checked off the two hardest boxes of the cycle, launching a home run and a triple in a 2-4 performance at the plate. She totaled three RBIs and two runs scored in the performance.
- Lexi Shaw went 1-4 with a double and a run scored, picking up her third extra-base hit in the last four games. She finishes the series with a .545 average (6-11) and three runs scored.
- Emily Castro registered an RBI, a walk and a run scored. She's now driven in one or more RBIs in four of the last five games.
- Castro led the team in RBI for the weekend, driving in seven runs while hitting .400 at the plate.
- Brett Coleman won her third game of the year, pitching 7.0 full innings and surrendering just five hits while striking out a pair of batters. She completes the weekend with a 2-0 record, going 14.0 innings and collecting five strikeouts.
- Sam Wendel went 1-2 with an RBI and a walk. She's now recorded at least one hit and one walk in consecutive games.
- The Cardinals took advantage of their opportunities, tallying seven hits with runners in scoring position to the result of five RBIs.
- UIW has now scored at least five runs in four consecutive games, its longest streak of the season.
- The Cardinals set a new season-high for runs scored in a series, with 21.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sobolewski opened up the scoring for UIW in the top of the first with a two-RBI triple...Castro brought Sobolewski home on a SAC fly to make it 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first...The Cardinals hung three more on the Wildcats in the third inning with a solo shot from Sobolewski followed by an error and a SAC hit from Sam Wendel to make it 6-0...ACU scored a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cut the deficit in half, but UIW added an insurance run in the seventh off an ACU throwing error... The Wildcats hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom half of the seventh but UIW limited the damage to just one run, winning the game by a score of 7-4.

The Cardinals host crosstown rivals UTSA in a midweek game Wednesday at H-E-B Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. (CT).
