SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team split today's conference doubleheader against Abilene Christian, scoring a combined 14 runs on the day. ACU took game one, 9-5 before UIW returned the favor in the following game, scoring a season-high nine runs to take down ACU, 9-5.
NOTABLES
- The offense got into a rhythm early and maintained it throughout the evening, due in large part to Lexi Shaw. The junior outfielder put together her best performance of the season, going 5-7 with a triple, two runs scored, a walk and a hit-by-pitch as the Wildcats couldn't seem to find a way to retire her.
- The triple was her second in the last three games she's played.
- Shelby Neatherlin went 5-8 with a home run and six RBIs on the day, including a career-high five RBIs in the 9-5 win.
- Over her last three games, Neatherlin is 6-13 with two home runs, seven RBIs, a walk and three runs scored.
- Emily Castro continues to be a force since since returning from injury last week. She went 4-8 today with a double and five RBIs, providing a huge lift to the Cardinal offense.
- Teanna Lucio also had a day at the plate for the Cardinals, connecting on 5-7 with a walk and four runs scored.
- Angel Villanueva and Hope Sobolewski added an RBI apiece to round out the scoring for UIW.
- UIW racked up 27 hits on the day, with nine different Cardinals tallying at least one base hit.
- The Cardinal bats hit a season-high 12 hits in the second game.
- It wasn't just the hitting that improved for the UIW offense, the team drew seven walks in the second game of the night, setting a new season-high.
- The 14 combined runs were the most scored by the Cardinals in a doubleheader all season long. UIW has now scored at least five runs in three consecutive games, the first time the team's done that all year, as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
UIW opened the scoring with a two-RBI single from Castro in the top of the first inning. ACU tied things up in the bottom half of the inning, but UIW responded in the top of the second with an RBI single from Neatherlin. The Wildcats once again tied things up in the third, but opened up their first lead of the game with three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. UIW tried to come back with a pair of RBI base hits from Villanueva and Castro in the sixth, but ACU added an insurance run to make it 9-5 heading into the top of the seventh. Jenna Blieberg led off the inning with a base hit, but that was all the offense UIW could muster in the inning as ACU held on to win, 9-5.
Game 2
The fireworks began with a four-run inning in the top of the first for UIW, starting with a leadoff triple from Shaw and a bunt single from Lucio to bring her home. Sobolewski laced an RBI double to left center and Castro followed with a two-RBI single to make it 4-0 before ACU even recorded its first plate appearance. The Wildcats got on the board in the second inning with one run, but the Cardinals responded in the top of the fourth with a three-run homer from Neatherlin. ACU countered with a two-run shot in the bottom half of the inning, but UIW got those two runs back in the next frame thanks to a two-RBI single from Neatherlin. ACU scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Cardinals held on to avenge their series opening loss by beating the Wildcats by the exact same score, 9-5.
