Cardinals flex defensive prowess, but drop both games of doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team lost a pair of games to Central Arkansas on Friday, losing first 6-1 and later 2-1, despite strong performances in the circle and on defense.

NOTABLES
  • Brett Coleman came within one strikeout of tying her career-high of six, pitching all 7.0 innings and surrendering six runs on seven hits.
  • Renee Hoffman started the second game of the evening and pitched a full 7.0 innings, allowing just two runs.
  • In just her second game since returning from injury, Emily Castro reached on all three of her appearances in the first game of the day, including a walk, triple and an RBI.
  • Angel Villanueva picked up a hit, a walk, a run and a stolen base on the day. Her six stolen bases are most on the team.
  • Delaney Guzman had the highlight defensive play of the night when the Bears had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the sixth inning in the second game. She fielded a base hit to right field and fired a throw to the plate to cut out the runner heading home from second base, limiting the damage to just one run scored and picking up the second out of the inning. The Cardinals got out of the inning trailing by just one run thanks to Guzman's efforts.
  • The Cardinals held the top-scoring offense in the Southland Conference to a combined eight runs on the day, just two days after Central Arkansas hung eight runs on Baylor in a single game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
The Bears got on the board in the first inning off an RBI double, but the Cardinals tied up the game in the third inning thanks to an RBI single from Castro. A three-run double and a pair of solo home runs in the seventh inning carried the Bears to victory.

Game 2
Central Arkansas again struck first with a run in the opening frame, but the Cardinals responded with a run on a groundout from Jaylin Olivarez in the second inning. Central Arkansas scored on the previously mentioned single to right field and held on despite a late rally from UIW in the bottom of the seventh. Nina Flores was hit by a pitch and then Shelby Neatherlin came on as a pinch hitter, delivering in a big spot by sending a base hit out to center field. The Cardinals couldn't scratch across any more runs, however, leaving both runners in scoring position to finish just short in the 2-1 loss.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals look to salvage one game of the series when they take on the Bears again tomorrow at noon.
