CLEARWATER, FLA. -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team defeated Bethune-Cookman, 4-0 in the opening game of the USF Clearwater Parks and Recreation Invitational.

NOTABLES

• Brett Coleman pitched a complete-game shutout, the first of her career. She has now earned a complete game in each of her last four starts.
• The sophomore went 7.0 innings allowing no runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out a career-high six batters.
• Coach Joe DiPietro on Coleman's performance: "She worked ahead in the count and got strikeouts and ground balls. She pitched great."
• Hope Sobolewski went 1-2 with a home run, her first of the season. She finished the game with a walk and two runs scored to go along with her solo shot.
• Sam Wendel finished the game 1-3 with a double, a season-high two RBIs and a run scored.
• Angel Villanueva brought home the fourth UIW run on a single in the fourth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman catcher Sam Wendel initiated the scoring in the second inning with a ground-rule double to left field, bringing home a pair of runs to open up a 2-0 lead. In the following inning, Hope Sobolewski sent a solo shot to left field, extending the Cardinals lead to 3-0. In the fourth inning, Angel Villanueva hit a single and Wendel made it home on an error, adding one final insurance run as UIW held its lead, behind yet another strong pitching performance form Coleman, earning its first win by the score of 4-0.
