Softball falls to Fordham, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

LAFAYETTE, LA. -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader, falling to Fordham (10-2) and then to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (6-2).

NOTABLES
  • Jenna Bleiberg went 3-7 on the day, pushing her batting average up to .333 on the season.
  • Jessica Rodriguez got the start in the circle against Fordham and pitched five innings, striking out five batters. Brett Coleman pitched two innings in relief, striking out two hitters.
  • Angel Villanueva finished the day 3-8 with two doubles, a run and a stolen base.
  • Freshman Renee Hoffman had two hits with a double and threw six innings, striking out three batters against TAMU-CC.
  • Shelby Neatherlin went 2-4 with two RBIs against the Islanders. She's now batting .308 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: vs. Fordham

Fordham jumped on the board first with two runs, both off singles, in the top of the first inning, but the Cardinals responded in the bottom of the inning. Villanueva doubled to center field and then scored on a Fordham error, cutting the Rams' lead to 2-1 after one frame.

The Rams added six more runs over the next two innings before Lexi Shaw scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth. Fordham then tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.

Game 1: vs. TAMU-CC

The Islanders got out in front early with a three-run blast in the bottom of the first. After the first inning shock, Renee Hoffman settled in, retiring 10 out of the next 12 batters and tossing three consecutive scoreless innings. TAMU-CC regained its form in the fifth, sprinkling in a run and then two more in the sixth.

The Cardinals found some offense in the fifth inning when Shelby Neatherlin drove in a run off an infield single. UIW started closing in on TAMU-CC again in the seventh, scoring a run on a Neatherlin single to right field, but the rally fell short as the Islanders captured the win.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals face the California Golden Bears at 10:30 a.m. (CT) Sunday. This will be the last game for UIW at the Ragin' Cajuns Classic.
