Cardinals drop first two games of Ragin’ Cajuns Classic

Lafayette, La. -- The University of the Incarnate Word softball team showed some bright spots against tough competition despite dropping its first two games of the 2019 season against Fordham and No. 15 Louisiana on Friday. The Cardinals lost to Fordham in the opening game, 7-1, before falling, 11-0, to the hosts, Louisiana, in game two.

NOTABLES

  • Freshman pitcher Renee Hoffman got her first career start in the season opener against Fordham, neglecting to walk a single batter through all six innings she pitched.
  • Hoffman retired 12 of the last 15 batters faced.
  • She also chipped in at the plate with a hit and a run.
  • Ashley Trapp, another impact freshman, put together a strong performance at the plate against Fordham, going 2-3 and recording her first collegiate RBI.
  • The Cardinal's defense looked sharp against Fordham, completing the game without committing an error. This was just the second errorless season opener for UIW since joining Division I - also 2017 vs. Louisiana Tech.
  • Sophomore Brett Coleman made her first start of the season, fourth of her career, against Louisiana.
  • Senior Jessica Rodriguez pitched 2.2 innings in relief against Louisiana, striking out two batters.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: vs. Fordham

Hoffman started in the circle for the Cardinals, marking the second straight year that Head Coach Joe DiPietro has started a true freshman. The Rams plated five runs on eight hits through the first 2.0+ innings, but the Michigan native settled in, retiring her next five batters faced and completing the next 4.0 innings with two earned runs on three hits while striking out two. She mixed her pitches well, forcing eight flyouts and eight groundouts to complement her 2 Ks.

Offensively, the Cardinals were led by Trapp. The freshman DP went 2-3 at the plate and drove in Hoffman in the fourth inning for her first collegiate RBI. The other UIW hit came courtesy of Hoffman, marking her first collegiate hit.

Game 2: at No. 15 Louisiana

Coleman got the start in the circle and completed 1.1 innings against the powerful Louisiana lineup, giving up six runs in the process. Rodriguez stepped in during the second inning and immediately made an impact, getting a ground out and fly out on the first two batters she faced to get the Cardinals out of a two-on, one-out scenario. Rodriguez recorded two strikeouts against the Ragin' Cajuns.

Over the next 2.0 innings, Louisiana's experienced lineup scored five runs to complete the win.

UP NEXT
The Cardinals get an opportunity to exact revenge on the Rams with a 9 a.m. matchup Saturday. At 2 p.m. (CT), UIW will take on Southland Conference foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
