Leftwich promoted to assistant coach

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word football program has elevated Mack Leftwich to assistant coach, announced Head Coach Eric Morris. Leftwich, who spent the 2018 season as a graduate assistant for the Cardinals, will be the quarterbacks coach.

"I'm excited to be able to keep Mack on staff," said Morris. "He has a good football knowledge and was able to connect with and teach the kids in an impressive way last season. His experience both at the quarterback position and in working with quarterbacks will prove invaluable as we continue to improve for next season."

Leftwich helped guide UIW to the best season in program history, one that included six wins, a Southland Conference championship, and a berth to the FCS Playoffs, a first in program history. The Cardinals finished the regular season with the third-best passing offense and the eighth-best total offense in the nation.

"I am very honored to have the chance to be full-time on this great staff," said Leftwich. "We have a strong group of quarterbacks on campus and I am excited to continue to develop those guys. This group has a chance to do some really special things, and I feel blessed to be part of it."

The Denton, Texas, native helped tutor freshman quarterback Jon Copeland, who won Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, earned second team all-conference honors, and was runner-up for the Jerry Rice FCS Freshman of the Year Award.

Prior to UIW, Leftwich was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Lehman High School in 2017. The youngest coordinator in the state of Texas, he handled all aspects of the offense including game planning, practice planning, scripting, and play calling. With Leftwich guiding the offense, the team broke school records for every major offensive category.

Before joining Lehman HS, Leftwich was a student assistant at UTEP in 2016, where he worked directly with the offensive coordinator. He handled all offensive quality control and was the main on-field communicator with the quarterbacks on game day.

Leftwich played quarterback at UTEP from 2013-15. He was selected to the team's leadership council and was a three-time C-USA academic honor roll selection.

Leftwich graduated with a bachelor's of multidisciplinary studies with a focus in mathematics and education from UTEP in 2017.

Leftwich replaces Wendel Davis, who took a position as a defensive quality control coach with the Green Bay Packers.
