SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team fell, 2-1, to San Jose State on Sunday afternoon at Benson Stadium.
 
NOTABLES

• Kas Van Eekelen led the Cardinals with three shots and one shot on goal.
• UIW's lone goal was scored by Koen Vos in the 43rd minute – his first as a Cardinal.
• Four Cardinals – Miguel Velasquez, Darius Feldman, Rob Lemmens and Timmy Talabi – contributed two shots each.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
FIRST HALF:
A busy first period as both teams fought for possession began with two saves by UIW goalkeeper Carlos Mercado to keep SJSU off the board, but the Spartans found a hole in the Cardinals' defense to score in the 19th minute and take a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals fought back, firing off five shots and three corner kicks but were unable to reach the back of the net. SJSU scored again in the 38th minute to take a 2-0 advantage. UIW quickly responded, scoring in the 43rd minute as Vos capitalized on a Cardinal corner kick by Van Eekelen to make the score 2-1, SJSU, at the end of the half.
 
SECOND HALF:
Offensively recharged in the second half, the Cardinals fired off 13 shots (five on goal) and utilized four corner kicks in an attempt to score. The Spartans had five shots and four corner kicks in the half. UIW fought hard to tie things up, firing off two shots in the last minute, but it was unable to capitalize and fell to SJSU, 2-1.

SJSU: 5-10-2, 5-3-2 WAC

The Cardinals close out their season, hosting UTRGV on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. (CT) for Senior Day.
