SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team wrapped up its 2019 season with a 2-0 shutout win over UTRGV on Senior Night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF:
The Cardinals wasted no time taking the lead in the first half.
Karol Wengrzik recorded his first goal as a Cardinal in the 6th minute to give UIW a 1-0 advantage. The Vaqueros attempted to get on the board, utilizing three shots and two corner kicks, but the Cardinals' defense was set up perfectly to halt UTRGV's advances. UIW held strong to the end the half and stayed up 1-0.
SECOND HALF:
UIW continued to apply pressure through the second half, blocking UTRGV's six shots and five corner kicks. The Cardinals fired off a shot and two corner kicks before reaching the back of the net in the 72nd minute. Johnathan Diaz, assisted by
Darius Feldman, found a gap in the Vaqueros' defense to put UIW up 2-0. UTRGV fired off three shots on goal in an attempt to get on the board, but it was stopped by the Cardinals backline as UIW ultimately blanked UTRGV, 2-0.

UTRGV: 8-6-2, 4-5-2 WAC
LOOKING BACK ON THE SEASON
- Junior defender Koen Vos was a key player in the Cardinals defense all season, halting the opponent's advances. He earned an important role, starting all 17 games.
- Senior defender Mateo Gutierez also played a key role defensively, applying pressure to get the ball out of the UIW box.
- Senior forward Miguel Velasquez led the team offensively with three goals, an assist and 15 shots on goal.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Carlos Mercado successfully protected the net, recording 57 saves for a .722 save percentage.
- Four of UIW's wins came via shutout.
- Freshmen Wengrzik and Victor Velasco proved themselves to be strong sparks off the bench for the Cardinals.
- Kevin Gutia and Kas Van Eekelen started all 17 games, logging over 1,200 minutes each.
