Volleyball battles hard but falls to McNeese, 3-2

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of Incarnate Word volleyball lost a back-and-forth match against McNeese on Saturday morning. The Cardinals we up 2-1 before ultimately falling to the Cowgirls in the fifth, deciding set.

NOTABLES

  • Julia Monday had her second-best season output as she amassed 18 kills against the Cowgirls.
  • On the defensive side, Alyssa Carlin also had her second-best season showing as she contributed 28 digs.
  • Bethany Clapp had a solid all-around match as she totaled 13 kills, 14 digs and also had three aces.
  • Camden Gray was a wall against the Cowgirls as she totaled 2.5 blocks (one solo and three assists).
  • The Cardinals had a 2-1 lead in the match, but the Cowgirls battled back to win the fourth set then were able to take the fifth set, 15-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (25-22) | The Cowgirls took an early 10-7 lead, but the Cardinals fought back winning four straight points highlighted by a Clapp kill to take an 11-10 lead. UIW held the lead for the remainder of the set. Allison Waits added three kills for the Cardinals in the set.

SET 2 (18-25) | This set saw the Cowgirls keep UIW an arms distance away for the whole set. Monday kept the team in it as she supplied some fire power with five kills. Carissa McGarity also factored in with three kills while Carlin contributed 12 digs through the first two sets. Gray also pitched in with some solid defense as she had 1.5 blocks (one solo and one assist).

SET 3 (25-22) | This set saw the Cardinals have two 4-point streaks that allowed them to win the set. The first streak came when they were down 11-10 and propelled them to a 14-11 lead. The second such streak took place when UIW had a 16-13 and pushed them to have a seven-point advantage at 20-13. The team was led by Monday who had seven kills in the set, followed by Clapp with four then Waits with three.

SET 4 (22-25) | With UIW up 2-1, McNeese played like a team down in a deciding set as they took a 16-9 lead. The Cardinals battled all the way back to make it 23-19 but it wasn't enough as the Cowgirls took the set to force a fifth set. Monday and Clapp were again the leaders on offense with four and three kills, respectively.

SET 5 (8-15) | The Cardinals ran out of gas and were unable to gain any momentum in the final set. The Cowgirls controlled tempo and finished the match with a 15-8 set victory. Waits and Clapp had two kills each in the deciding set. 

UP NEXT
UIW returns to San Antonio as they will play their final two home games of the season. On Thursday, Nov. 7, they host Abilene Christian at 6:00 p.m. (CT). Senior day will be on Saturday, Nov. 9, against Stephen F. Austin at noon. Three seniors will be honored: Cameron Taylor, Allison Waits and Mckayla Landreth.
