SAN ANTONIO – University of the Incarnate Word football student-athlete TJ Wright has been named to the Academic All-District® football first team, selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), on Thursday.
 
"I'm so proud of TJ and how hard he works both in the classroom and on the field," said UIW football Head Coach Eric Morris. "He is the epitome of the term 'student-athlete', and his leadership is vital to our team. TJ has such a bright future, and I'm excited to watch him achieve his goals."
 
To be eligible for the Academic All-District® football team, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average at his current institution who participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form.
 
Wright is a redshirt sophomore rehabilitative science major with a minor in psychology. He has a 3.85 GPA and lofty goals. The San Antonio native is pre-med with a goal of becoming a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. Upon graduation from UIW, Wright plans to join the Air Force to help with the cost of medical school.
 
Wright is a member of the Alpha Chi Honor Society, which includes only the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors at UIW. He is also a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, which he earned for being in the top 10 percent of his freshmen class at UIW. Additionally, Wright is a member of the National Society of Leadership and Success.
 
A leader on the field as well, Wright has played in seven games for the Cardinals. He currently has 17 tackles (seven unassisted, 10 assisted). Wright has 4.0 tackles for loss for 12 yards, including 2.0 sacks for nine yards. Additionally, he has forced two fumbles on the season.
 
First team selections are automatically nominated for Academic All-America®, selected by CoSIDA. The Academic All-America® team will be announced on Dec. 9.
