Cardinals travel to New Mexico State

SAN ANTONIO – The University of the Incarnate Word football team heads west to face New Mexico State University on Saturday in Aggie Memorial Stadium at 3 p.m. (CT).

THE MATCHUP
  • This is the first meeting between the Cardinals and the Aggies.
  • NM State is the second FBS opponent the Cardinals play this season. UIW also faced UTSA on Aug. 31 at the Alamodome.
  • UIW is the only FCS team the Aggies face this season.
 
THE CARDINALS
  • Sophomore quarterback Jon Copeland is 163 yards away from setting the program's single season passing record. He has 2,822 yards so far this season.
  • Copeland currently holds the single season passing record with 2,984 yards, which he set in 2018.
  • Copeland has passed for over 300 yards in five games this season, and 10 in his career at UIW.
  • The Cardinal defense has tallied 17 interceptions, which has contributed to their 30 turnovers gained this season. UIW also has a nation-leading turnover margin of 1.60.
  • The 30 turnovers lead both FCS and FBS teams and the 17 interceptions is tied for first in all of Division I football (Oregon also has 17).
  • Defensively, UIW ranks second in the nation (first in the SLC) for defensive touchdowns, scoring four this season.
  • Sophomore running back Ameer King leads the Cardinals with 456 rushing yards this season. He is now fifth in program history with 916 career rushing yards.  
 
SCOUTING NEW MEXICO STATE
  • The Aggies are 0-9 overall after falling, 41-3, to Ole Miss on Nov. 9.
  • As an independent football team, New Mexico State has played three Power 5 teams, including Ole Miss, then-No. 23 Washington State and then-No. 3 Alabama.
  • Josh Adkins leads the Aggies with 1,924 passing yards. He has completed 211 out of 334 pass attempts; he has also thrown 14 interceptions.
  • Defensively, Javahn Fergurson has a team-best 104 tackles, including 5.0 tackles for loss for nine yards. His 104 tackles (11.6 per game) rank fifth in the nation.
  • Adkins' 23.44 pass completions per game ranks ninth in the FBS.
