WACO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word football team is ranked No. 25 in the latest AFCA FCS Coaches' Top 25 Poll, announced the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) on Monday. This marks the third time in program history the Cardinals have been ranked: UIW was ranked No. 24 in the FCS STATS Media Poll on 11/12/18; UIW was ranked No. 24 in both the STATS FCS Media Poll and the AFCA Coaches Poll on 11/18/18.
 
The Cardinals are coming off three consecutive wins in conference play. Following a defeat at Sam Houston State (9/21), UIW secured a home victory against Abilene Christian (31-24 on 9/28) and back-to-back road wins against ranked opponents: at No. 25 Houston Baptist (38-36 on 10/5) and at No. 23/25 Southeastern Louisiana (27-21 on 10/12).
 
This marks the first time in program history UIW has recorded two consecutive Southland Conference road wins, and it also ties the program's record for road wins in a single season.
 
UIW's victory against the Lions on Saturday was highlighted by six forced turnovers, with five takeaways on defense and one on special teams. This marked a season high in forced turnovers and ranks second in program history (behind seven takeaways against No. 21 Sam Houston State, 11/3/18).
 
The Cardinal defense has recorded a nation-leading 13 interceptions thus far. When combined with six fumble recoveries, UIW has 19 total takeaways, which ranks second in the nation. Additionally, the 1.83 turnover margin also is a national best, while UIW's two defensive touchdowns lead the conference and rank No. 6 nationally.
 
The Cardinals are also receiving votes in the STATS FCS Top 25 poll.
 
UIW returns home to Benson Stadium for a three-game homestand, starting with Lamar on Saturday. Saturday's contest is slated for a 4 p.m. (CT) kickoff.
