UIW adds Stephen McCarthy as assistant men's soccer coach

SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer Head Coach Chris Fidler expanded his staff, adding assistant coach Stephen McCarthy.

"I am pleased to welcome Stephen to our university and men's soccer program here at UIW," said Fidler. "I've known about Stephen for a while especially with him being here in town playing for SAFC. After meeting him and discussing our vision for the future of the program, it was a no-brainer to bring him on board."

McCarthy joins the staff after announcing his retirement from professional football following an eight-season career. He spent the last three years as a defender for the San Antonio Football Club. During his tenure with San Antonio FC, he racked up the second-most minutes in club history with 4,777 minutes in 57 appearances for the club. In 54 starts, McCarthy recorded three goals and one assist.

Before joining San Antonio FC in 2016, McCarthy spent his 2015 season playing for the Finnish first division side Kuopion Palloseura.

"I am very excited for this new challenge and feel extremely blessed to be given an opportunity at such a prestigious university," McCarthy said. "I cannot wait to get started working with the guys."

McCarthy was drafted by Major League Soccer club New England Revolution in 2011. He spent four seasons in New England where he recorded two goals in 69 appearances and earned Revolution's Defender of the Year in 2012.

McCarthy spent his collegiate years playing at Santa Clara University and University of North Carolina. He graduated from UNC in May 2011 with bachelor's of arts with distinction, sociology.

"He has a wealth of experience playing at the Division 1 level, MLS and here for SAFC, which I believe he can relay to our current and incoming players for future seasons," Fidler said. "Not only this but he has relationships with the community already which I hope brings new fans and supporters to the school. It's an exciting time for the program."
