DENTON, Texas -- The University of North Texas defeated the University of the Incarnate Word, 58-16, Saturday night in a non-conference game at Apogee Stadium.

The Cardinals are 0-2 after opening the season with two Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents. North Texas won its second game of the season. UIW begins Southland Conference play at home next Saturday night at 6 p.m. (CT) against Stephen F. Austin.

UIW highlights included 55- and 42-yard touchdown runs from scrimmage by
Ra'Quanne Dickens, an interception by linebacker
Silas Stewart, and a 29-yard field goal by
Cody Seidel.

UNT opened the game with a 75-yard, 15-play drive, capped by DeAndre Torrey's one-yard touchdown run. When UIW's defense halted UNT's third-down attempt on the second drive, Cole Hedlund kicked a 29-yard field goal to give the Mean Green a 10-0 lead.

On UIW's subsequent possession, quarterback
Jon Copeland hit
Phillip Baptiste for 32 yards, followed two plays later by Dickens' 55-yard scoring burst. A blocked Cardinal extra point resulted in a 10-6 North Texas lead with 5:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Two plays into the second quarter, North Texas scored on a one-yard run by Torrey, moving the score to 17-6. Later in the second quarter, the Cardinals' Stewart picked off Jacob Darden's pass to give UIW new life at the UIW 39.

North Texas then scored on a 15-yard pass from Mason Fine to Jalen Guyton -- giving the Mean Green a 24-6 lead with 10:48 remaining before the half. With 6:56 left before the break, Torrey capped a long UNT drive with a one-yard rush, moving the score to 31-6.

With 1:11 left in the second quarter, UNT's Fine connected with Rico Bussey for a 13-yard touchdown pass, extending the Mean Green lead to 38-6. Henlund's 27-yard field goal closed the half with North Texas ahead, 41-6.

The Cardinals came out of the locker room and mounted a 72-yard, 13-play drive, capped by Seidel's 29-yard field goal.

With 2:30 remaining in the third quarter, Dickens scored on a 42-yard touchdown scamper, capping an eight-play, 75-yard drive.

North Texas scored two touchdowns and kicked one field goal in the second half.
