SAN ANTONIO -- When Remy Huston Jr. became head coach of the University of the Incarnate Word's men's golf program in June, he vowed to "provide my players with challenges, opportunities, and avenues to better their game."
 
With the release of the Cardinals' schedule, Huston has demonstrated his strategy for fulfilling that vow. UIW is set to play in nine tournaments -- golfing in three time zones, over varying topography, and at different altitudes. The opposition consists of familiar rivals and first-time challengers.
 
UIW opens its fall season in the Battle of the Big Easy, a tournament set at sea level on the banks of the Mississippi River in New Orleans. Then, several weeks later, the Cardinals play in the Herb Wimberly Invitational, set at 3,900 feet on the campus of New Mexico State University.
 
"Playing in Las Cruces is great," Huston said. "We'll see how our game travels to a higher elevation, over different grass, as well as being in mountain and valley terrain."
 
In the spring, UIW takes its clubs to a famed venue in the golf world, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where it will challenge unfamiliar competition in the Bash at the Beach Tournament.
 
"I'm excited for our guys to play at the Surf Golf and Beach Club," Huston said. "There are newly built green complexes, which are said to be tremendous. It's always nice to play on a new course, against competition we don't see often, in a different part of the country."
 
The Cardinals also compete in five different tournaments in Texas, including a home event at The Republic Golf Club in San Antonio on Oct. 29-30.
