BERKELEY, Calif. -- The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team lost a hard-fought, 1-0, match at the University of California on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
SPREAD THE WORD: Carlos Guerrero led the Cardinals with two shots on goal
. The UIW defense mustered five saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF: Cal outshot UIW 6-1, but the Cardinal defense stepped up and held the Golden Bears scoreless as the teams entered the break.
SECOND HALF: Cal broke a tie game at the 48:42 mark with goal by Shinya Kadona, off of an assist by Ian Lonergan.
INTERIM UIW HEAD COACH CHRIS FIDLER SAID: "In my relatively short coaching career at the collegiate level, I've never been prouder of a group of young men than I have tonight. After the freak game we experienced Friday evening, which i take full responsibility for after some naive decisions on my part, we decided to change the system to utilize our strengths.
"Even after going down to 10 men against a PAC-12 powerhouse for most of the game, the guys stuck with the game plan and gave it their all. This shows me that this team has a superb inner belief and desire to be successful this season, even when all the odds are against them. The key now for us as a team is to regroup Tuesday morning and replicate that same desire and hunger in practice, as we look forward to another tough road trip next weekend against SMU."
