SAN ANTONIO -- University of the Incarnate Word senior wide receiver
Kody Edwards was selected to the Preseason All-Southland Conference offensive second team, the league office announced Thursday.
Â
"After missing last season, Kody had a great spring with us and has really bought in to the new culture and system we are implementing here at UIW," said head football coach
Eric Morris. "He had a great junior year and we are excited to see what his senior season brings."
Â
As a junior in 2016, Edwards played in 10 games where he led the Cardinals in catches (39), yards (712), yards per catch (18.3), and touchdowns (eight). The Mesquite, Texas, native averaged a team-high 71.2 yards per game. His 712 receiving yards ranks second in program history for a single season, while his 39 receptions ranks fourth.
Â
Edwards had three 100-yard games, amassing 159 yards against Texas A&M-Kingsville, 139 yards at No. 2 Sam Houston, and 120 yards at Lamar. His 159-yard game at TAMUK ranks third all-time in program history. Edwards also broke the program record for touchdowns in a game, scoring three against the Bearkats on Oct. 8.
Â
In addition to wide receiver, Edwards led the Cardinals with 18 kickoff returns for 391 yards. In all, he ranked third in program history with 1,125 all-purpose yards in a single season. For his efforts during the 2016 season, Edwards was named second team All-SLC for all-purpose players.
Â
Edwards and the Cardinals open the 2018 season Sept. 1 at New Mexico.
