SAN ANTONIO – With 23 games remaining in the 2018 campaign, the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team equaled last season's win total with a 10-1 thrashing of Texas Southern on Saturday at Sully.
HOW IT WAS WON
The Cardinals (20-12) captured a first-inning lead when
Kyle Bergeron and
Ridge Rogers came in on an
Eddy Gonzalez single through the right side.
The fourth inning belonged to
Ryan Gonzalez. The preseason All-Southland Conference shortstop ended the top half of the frame with an incredible diving play behind second base to rob the Tigers (11-19) of a single up the middle. He then led off the bottom of the inning with a double that hit the wall in left field and ignited a five-hit, five-run outpouring.
The Cardinals captured an 8-0 advantage in the sixth when
Mark Whitehead was driven in by Rogers.
TSU broke up the shutout with an RBI-double in the seventh.
UIW chipped in a pair of insurance runs in the eighth to secure a 10-1 lead and the Tigers had no answers for
Luke Taggart or the Cardinals defense.
LEADERS
- Bergeron paced UIW with a 2-for-5 day, 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Rogers went 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs and a run scored, while Eddy Gonzalez finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a run. Ryan Gonzalez turned in a 3-for-5 day at the plate, driving in one run and scoring another.
- Taggart (4-1) picked up the win, tossing an efficient complete game with only 85 total pitches. He allowed one run on six hits.
NOTEABLES
Including Saturday's win, UIW is 18-3 when scoring first. The Cardinals are 2-9 when their opponent scores first.
