UIW Defeats UNO 8-2, Takes Series

NEW ORLEANS -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team secured a series victory over the University of New Orleans with an 8-2 win Sunday afternoon at Maestri Field.

HOW THE GAME WAS WON
The Cardinals took an early lead and never looked back en route to a series victory over the Privateers. A Kyle Bergeron RBI double to left center drove in Mark Whitehead in the top of the first for the early 1-0 advantage.

The Cardinals added three more runs in the second frame. Whitehead's RBI single to left center scored Ryan Gonzalez, Ridge Rogers used a single to plate Sean Arnold, and Bergeron collected his second RBI of the game to bring home Whitehead, giving UIW the 4-0 advantage.

UIW extended its lead again in the fourth inning when Arnold scored on a sacrifice bunt by Bergeron. Rogers then scored on a Privateer error to give the Cardinals a 6-0 edge.

In the top of the seventh frame, David Anaya's RBI double down the left field line drove in Rogers and increased UIW's advantage to 7-0.

The Privateers jumped on the board in the bottom of the eighth, scoring on back-to-back RBI singles, but the Cardinals responded in the ninth when a Rogers single up the middle scored Shea Gutierrez before UIW eventually finished the 8-2 victory.
