SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team scored two runs to rally in the bottom of the ninth, but ultimately dropped a 5-2 decision to Nicholls State University in game two of the series on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single to right center. Nicholls extended its advantage in the second inning, scoring on a ground out before adding three runs in the ninth for a 5-0 advantage.
The Cardinals rallied in the bottom of the ninth.
Eddy Gonzalez scored on a bases-loaded walk before a
Shea Gutierrez RBI single drove in
Lee Thomas, but the rally fell short as Nicholls secured the 5-2 win.
NOTABLES
- Luke Taggart (4-2) suffered the loss, throwing five strikeouts and allowing zero walks in 7.2 innings.
- E. Gonzalez's two hits extended his hitting streak to eight games. This was also his 22nd consecutive game to reach base.
- Ryan Flores is on a nine-game hitting streak after recording a hit in the second game against the Colonels.
